Western Wall, Jerusalem Series-Daphne Odjig

Daphne Odjig is a world known Artist from Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve on Manitoulin Island Ontario, Canada. She was born September 11, 1919 and descended from the great chief Black Partridge, Potawatomi Tribe (Keepers of the Fire) The Potawatomi where members of the Three Fires Confederacy of the Great Lakes along with the Ojibwa and Odawa. 


In the 70's Daphne was commissioned by El Al Airline to paint Jerusalem from her eyes. She created the 1976-The Jerusalem Series (1976) This being only one of her many wonderful paintings and series. 
She created 5 painting for this series

1963  Became a Member of the British Columbia Federation of Artists

1973  Co-Founded the Professional Native Indian Artists Inc.
with Norval Morriseau, Alex Janvier,  Joseph Sanchez, Jackson Beardy, Eddie Cobiness and Carl Ray the group is 
Commonly referred to as the "Indian Group of Seven"

1985  Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, conferred by the University of Toronto, Toronto ON 

1989  Elected Member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art ( R.C.A.)

2002  Queen Elizabeth II - Commemorative Golden Jubilee Medal

2007  Received the Governor General’s Laureate, Visual & Media Arts. This award is Canada’s highest honour in the field of Visual Arts.

2008  Was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, Okanagan Arts Awards 

As an Ojibwa woman myself, I look to Daphne not only as an Artist but as a Woman of Strength, Wisdom and Courage. Her work will forever remain timeless.
